A Girl’s Best Friend - Otis my Hearing Dog

I applied to Hearing Dogs UK when I was 16 years old. The application and the process took a long time but I was matched with Otis my handsome black Labrador in March 2020.

Most young people have some confidence wobbles as they mature, but as a young deaf person, the added communication barriers really affected my confidence.

My deafness isn’t visible and the simplest everyday tasks such as getting on public transport, popping to the corner shop and meeting new people filled me with dread. I would retreat to my bedroom and stay there for hours.

Then along came Otis - and Covid! I came home with Otis the day before the full lockdown in March, it was a close call I can tell you that!

We’ve used the time during lockdown to bond together and have formed a great partnership. There’s never a dull moment with Otis and we are already planning new adventures!
