Disabled Employment Programmes




Employ Me - Mencap

Employ Me is Mencap's specialised programme to support people with learning disabilities find paid work and to develop work skills.

Mencap works with individuals to find out what job they want to do, provide practical training, work placements and support in finding paid work. They also help with in-work support and travel to work training.

Pluss

Pluss is a social enterprise that supports people with disabilities and other disadvantages move towards and into employment.

It operates the Work Choice programme (see below) on behalf of the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

Pluss also provides supported training for people with learning difficulties in vocational skills and employment skills.

The company mainly operates in the South West.

Supported Internships and Traineeship Programmes

The Government have two schemes to help disabled young people find employment and increase their employability skills.

The Trainneships Programme is aimed at young people aged 16 to 24 years to provide workplace experience and an opportunity to learn job related skills.

Supported Internships are structured study programmes with on the job training.  It is aimed at 16 to 25 year olds with complex learning difficulties and disabilities.

The Access to Work Scheme can be used for Support Internships to help pay for disability related costs in the workplace such as a job coach and extra fares to work.

Both schemes are offered through Further Education colleges.







The Shaw Trust

The Shaw Trust helps disabled and disadvantaged people achieve their employment and personal goals.

They provide support for individuals to become work ready and to gain life skills. Each individual's programme is tailored to their need.

The Trust currently offers:

  • The Work Programme - Referrals made by Job Centre Plus to the Shaw Trust who will give support and guidance to help you find a job. On-going support and training are provided once you are working. This is available in Swindon, Weston-Super-Mare and West Midlands.
  • Work Choice* aimed at individuals who may find it hard to find work because of their disability. This is delivered throughout the UK.
  • Independent Living Support - To help you make choice and manage your care through self directed support (Direct Payments. It is offered in Bath and North East Somerset, Bridgend, Neath, Port Talbot, Newham, Swansea, Solihull and Walsall.

Work Choice*

Work Choice is a specialist employment programme to help the disabled find a job and provide support when starting work.

This may include:

  • Training and developing skills
  • Confidence building
  • Interview coaching

Work support is delivered by different providers around the country.  It may last from 3 months to 2 years depending on the level of support required.
